My wife and I have twin boys, so we have had 2 kids under 2 for 2 straight years. They are a bit older now, but we also have a young daughter. I put together some helpful tips based on my experiences. It is not always easy, and you need to take advantage of the time when they are sleeping. Most importantly, stick to a consistent schedule that will help you accomplish everything you need to in addition to childcare.

Having two young children so close in age comes with unique rewards and challenges. With some planning and self-care, you can make this season manageable and enjoyable. Use these tips to care for your little ones while also taking care of yourself.

1. Establish Consistent Routines

Structure and predictability are crucial when juggling the needs of two infants or toddlers. Create a schedule for things like:

  • Feeding times
  • Nap times
  • Play time
  • Bedtime routines

While flexibility is still important, having a consistent daily flow will reduce stress for you and the kids.

2. Take Turns with Your Partner

Tag-teaming parenting responsibilities will allow each of you to dedicate one-on-one time with each child. Trade off watching the kids, doing bedtime routines, etc. Making sure you both get bonding time reduces sibling rivalry.

3. Get Help From People You Trust

Don’t be afraid to ask family and friends for occasional help with childcare. Or consider hiring a part-time sitter or nanny, even for just a few hours a week. Having some time to yourself is so important.

4. Encourage Interaction and Cooperation

Provide toys and activities that allow your children to positively interact and play together. Reinforce cooperation and teamwork. This builds their relationship.

5. Designate Safe Play Spaces

Set up separate baby-proofed areas with engaging toys where each child can explore safely. Use playpens, baby gates, etc. This gives you peace of mind.

6. Take Time for Yourself

Make self-care a priority, whether it’s getting exercise, enjoying a hobby, or simply relaxing. Happy parents make for a happy household. Don’t forget about your needs.

7. Join a Support Group

Find community with other parents going through the same experience. Share advice and resources. It helps to know you’re not alone!

The toddler years are full of wonder and exhaustion. With the right strategies, you can find joy in this challenging but rewarding season of parenting two little ones! Please let me know if you have any questions in the comments section. I will be able to use my experience to answer them.
